Why do I have to sign up?
Gengomori is built around progress tracking to help you identify areas to improve. Progress and personalised lessons are stored at the user level to not lose your progress when you close the browser.
Is Gengomori really free?
Yes. You can sign up and start learning right away at no cost as long as you don't mind ads. If you enjoy using Gengomori, I'd appreciate it if you bought me a matcha 🍵 or become a supporter to help cover hosting costs.
How is this different from other language learning apps?
Gengomori focuses on self-paced and self-guided learning. It's not about streaks, pressure or microtransactions. It aims to help you learn the fundamentals of the Japanese language. However, you won't find full courses on or lessons to get you talking quickly for your holiday in Japan. If you're looking for that, you might want to check out if there is anything for you in the Resources page.
What kind of Japanese can I learn here?
Gengomori loosely follows JLPT — grammar, verbs, adjectives and more as a starting point. Currently mostlycovering N5 and slowly expanding up but will unlikely go past N3 as that requires a different approach.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. You can delete your account anytime from your settings. This will permanently remove all your data. Please consider dropping me a line why you're deleting your account should you do, so I can improve Gengomori for everyone.
Why build this?
I built Gengomori mainly for myself as I'm learning Japanese myself and was looking for a tool that would help me study at my own pace. Having to switch between multiple apps, decks and websites to cover different aspects of the language was getting somewhat frustrating I was also looking for a way to focus on the areas I was weak in and train parts of the language that were new to me on the fly.
